KAAPA Ethanol was formed in February 2001 with a vision to build a strong, farmer-owned ethanol company rooted in the Midwest. Construction of its first facility began in September 2002 in Minden, Nebraska, using a Fagen/ICM design. By November 2003, the Minden plant was operational with an initial capacity of 40 million gallons annually. KAAPA continued to strengthen its market position in December 2004 by becoming an equity owner of Renewable Products Marketing Group (RPMG), expanding its reach in ethanol marketing.
Growth and expansion followed quickly. In July 2006, KAAPA completed a major expansion and debottlenecking project at the Minden facility, increasing capacity to 60 million gallons per year. The company continued to diversify its assets in June 2007 with the purchase of KAAPA Grains in Elm Creek, Nebraska. In October 2009, KAAPA acquired a portion of the Janesville, Minnesota ethanol facility out of the VersaSun bankruptcy, bringing total capacity to 100 million gallons. This momentum continued in September 2010 with the purchase of a controlling interest in the Lima, Ohio ethanol facility.
In January 2013, KAAPA created KAAPA Ethanol Holdings, LLC, establishing a holding structure to support continued growth. Later that year, in December 2013, the company purchased a portion of Hankinson Renewable Energy in Hankinson, North Dakota from Murphy Oil, increasing capacity to 130 million gallons. Operational excellence remained a priority, and by March 2016, the Minden facility reached an annualized production rate of 80 million gallons.
KAAPA further expanded its footprint with the purchase of the Ravenna, Nebraska ethanol plant from Abengoa in September 2016. The Ravenna facility underwent multiple improvements, including an expansion to 110 million gallons in November 2017 and additional debottlenecking in May 2019 to reach 125 million gallons annually. Most recently, in February 2023, KAAPA acquired a portion of the Aurora, Nebraska ethanol plant and formed KAAPA Partners Aurora, LLC, adding 90 million gallons of capacity. In September 2023, the company streamlined its portfolio with the sale of its interest in the Guardian Plants located in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Ohio.
